Artist Statement
These paintings are about color, form, light and different ways of seeing. The structure of the composition is aimed at drawing the viewer into a visual labyrinth, seeing things from multiple perspectives, starting and ending points. It’s a visual walk through these created spaces.
I started out drawing in oil wash, using a small pointed brush to do a line drawing of foreground and background. I usually do line drawings on several canvases, before I begin applying any color, hopefully allowing me more opportunity to work on compositionals issues on one painting that I might apply similarly on another. I’m using cubism or a stained glass window effect as references so as to allow me to break up the images to create a composite view or see a reality made up of many small views. The cubism aspect is an important focus for me as I continue to explore the many ways to work in that genre.
I frequently make changes in composition as I proceed to apply more layers of paint in various parts of the picture until I sense an overall balance in the painting. Proceeding, I experiment with a full range of paint application from transparent glazes to thick opaque textures. I’m putting things in and taking them out in this process until I feel the painting is telling me it’s complete.
